Private dining in Cardiff

Much of Cardiff’s blossoming food scene draws on the surrounding area’s rich produce and culinary heritage, but there’s also a wide variety of international cuisine available from Spanish tapas to modern Indian.

If you’re looking to book a private event in the city – take a look at these fabulous venues below, from family run and Michelin starred restaurants, to Masonic halls and even the castle!

Fine Dining

Park House Restaurant

This fabulous Grade 1 listed Gothic building has been serving up a fabulous private dinners and events for the great and good for over 14 years. There’s a multitude of private dining options for between 10 and 100 guests, including the Taittinger Bar, The Burges Restaurant which can be hired exclusively and the atmospheric La Cave. The spaces are versatile, used for celebrations as well as award ceremonies and product launches. Party packages are available, and it’s a popular wedding venue for receptions up to 80.

Restaurant James Sommerin

This Michelin starred restaurant has a private room for 12 that’s separated from the main restaurant by sliding glass doors – so as not to block the fabulous views from the restaurant’s floor to ceiling windows. Weekdays guests can choose from the a la carte, Fridays and Saturdays only two tasting menus are available – the six-course menu for £75 per person and the nine-course menu for £95. Tasting menus are surprising – with not all diners receiving the same menu on the same night. There’s also a chef’s table for just four diners, where a 14-course menu is served for £150 per person.

Castles and Impressive Buildings

Cardiff Masonic Hall

From the superb Duke of Connaught Temple and suite for up to 150 and 100 guests respectively to committee rooms for just 18, there are 11 different spaces that can be hired within this unique building. It’s regularly used for a variety of business meetings and events as well as weddings and other large family events. (prices on application)

Portland House

This Grade II listed venue in the heart of Cardiff Bay has a variety of private rooms and can host a multitude of different events – from conferences, exhibitions and corporate events to proms, balls and gala dinners, private events, product launches and weddings. Dinner style, it seats up to 320 and theatre style up to 500 (standing 700). A range of menus are available from set courses, to tasting and bespoke and start at around £25 a head.

Cardiff Castle

It doesn’t come more iconic than Cardiff Castle, and its multitude of rooms can cater for everything from corporate events, to weddings, gala dinners and Christmas parties. The stunning banqueting hall can host up to 100 guests, as does the Undercroft – which dates back to the 15th century. Other rooms cater for smaller numbers from 20 guests upwards. Spanish Tapas

La Cuina

This wonderful and vibrant family-run and Michelin-listed Spanish restaurant offers the upstairs dining room for private hire. It seats around 25-30 guests, and with menus tailor-made for each event they offer tapas, three-course, or more course menus and even wedding extravaganzas with up to seven courses. Room hire may be charged depending on the size, time and day of event. Menus start at around £35/40 per person and tapas options are also available.

Bar 44

Part of the best Spanish restaurant group in Cardiff for 2019, Bar 44 has two rooms which can be used for private events. The first seats up to 40, the second up to 20 – with both being regularly used for baby showers, birthday celebrations and wedding parties. There’s a tapas style sharing menu with two options to choose from at £24 and £28 per person, as well as roast options on Sundays – pork belly £17 per person, beef at £19 per person – also served in a sharing style.

Indian

Purple Poppadum

This multi-award-winning restaurant is bright, buzzy and available for exclusive hire for parties of over 50. Serving fabulous modern Indian cuisine – recognised by Michelin – a variety of menus are available from three (or more) course taster options to sharing platters. Normally closed for lunch, they can host business meetings and lunches as well as other daytime events on request. Menus start at around £30 per person.

Gourmet Pubs & Bistros

Bully’s

Recognised as one of Cardiff’s ‘little gems’, this award-winning restaurant specialises in using seasonal produce in its modern European menus. They can host business lunches, meetings, celebrations and even weddings for up to 50 guests. Three course menus cost from around £40 per person and the restaurants also boasts a great French-leaning wine list showcasing smaller growers.

Hare and Hounds

With a host of awards and a Michelin Bib Gourmand, this gorgeous hygge-style pub offers a private dining room to the side of the main restaurant for up to 16 guests. With menus that change twice daily, they arrange bespoke menus for events from pre-chosen a la carte options to sharing dishes, buffets and standing receptions. The whole venue can also be hired exclusively for around 35 guests and is often used for pre-wedding dinners as well as other personal celebrations, while in the summer it’s possible to add a marque in the garden for larger events. Menus start at around £30 per person and exclusive hire charges begin at £600 but vary dependent on time and date of event.

The Heathcock

Owned by the same couple behind The Hare and Hounds, this larger venue in a residential suburb offers the fully private and self-contained Skittles Alley for up to 35 guests. Available for board room style business meetings during the day for between 10-30 people, it’s a great space for local corporate entertaining or all-day events. It’s also used for a wide variety of private events and watch this space for the addition of French window-style doors to enable direct access to the private garden area. Menus offered range from pre-ordered a la carte to fabulous sharing dishes such as whole seabass or venison shoulders. Hire charge depends on time, date and size of event.
