Overview
The Square, owned by Philip Howard and Nigel Platts-Martin opened its doors in King Street, St. James' in 1991.
Philip Howard has been chef and co-owner of The Square since its opening in 1991. Whilst the style of his cooking has evolved and progressed, receiving many awards and accolades along the way, the fundamental backbone of his dishes remains unchanged.
Impeccable seasonal ingredients are accurately cooked and brought together on the plate in a harmonious, elegant, yet satisfying manner. He has been supported by his hugely talented head chef Robert Weston for over 10 years. Seven years later it moved to its current location of Bruton Street, Mayfair.
The Square, its food, its wine and its owners have amassed a multitude of awards and accolades along the way.
Most recently, the restaurant won the BMW Square Meal 'Restaurant of the Year 2007' for an unprecedented second year and holds the Which? Good Food Guide's 'Best Wine List 2008'.
The smart, contemporary private dining room can seat between 8-18 guests and benefits from complete privacy and close proximity to the entrance of the restaurant.
Room hire is not charged at The Square Restaurant. However there is a deposit of £400 for Lunch or £500 for Dinner which will be deducted from the main bill.
Lunch menu is £40.00 per person (choice of 1 starter, 1 main & 1 dessert)

Insider View
The private dining room at The Square is very much as you would expect from a Phil Howard/Nigel Platts-Martin venture. The multi-Michelin starred group takes understatement to it’s core. Everything it does is simple and elegant yet excellent. They use beige, creams, browns and warm greys with splashes of colour to superb effect throughout the group and The Square is no exception.
Walking in through the glass doors, you’re greeted by immaculate, well trained staff, who manage to combine friendliness with professionalism without becoming stuffy – not a skill everyone can master.
The small bar area is mainly for servicing the restaurant, and isn’t really useable for receptions as it’s also the access route to the main restaurant. However a small array of plush red velvet sofas and comfy armchairs do provide some scope for smaller gatherings either for early meetings before the main restaurant service kicks off, or for post dinner night-caps. Equipped with a digestif trolley and surrounded by the restaurant’s beautiful silk curtains, it could certainly provide a great post-event relaxation opportunity.
The private dining room itself is located behind the bar, so for parties where privacy is important, it’s ideal as guests do not have to walk into or through the restaurant at any point (toilets are adjacent to the pdr). In fact, the room is so discretely hidden behind the bar, you’d hardly know it was there.
Inside the room, which seats a maximum of 18 covers (19 at a sqeeze), there’s no natural daylight but the lighting is adjusted to reflect the timing and type of event.
A simple box room has been given an elegant feel with the use of brush-effect, paint-washed walls combining goldy-yellow and silvery-blue. An oversize mirror adorns one wall, while the others feature striking aqua-blue modern artwork and blue panels. The only other furniture in the room is a mahogany side-board with a retro art-nouveaux feel and a low round crystal bowl as a table centre which is filled with floating flowers.
There’s no room hire charge, just a deposit of £400 for lunch or £500 for dinner. Extra flower arrangements can be ordered at the time of booking. The menus are typical of this two Michelin-starred restaurant: classic, yet contemporary, well balanced and exquisitely executed. Three courses £90.
It all makes for a very calming, yet striking room – but there’s definitely a masculine feel to it. The room is due to have a refurb in the nearish future, and it’s rumoured the blue artwork is set to be changed, but for now they remain.
