Insider View

Brick Lane is never going to be glamorous but it’s also confusing. Every restaurant seems to have won an award, so how is one supposed to know where the right or best place to go is? It has to come down to the cooking. The team at Sheba restaurant, winner of countless awards, which are liberally displayed on its front window, is headed by a local chef Gulab Miah who is himself award-winning, including MasterChef of the Year 2006/2007/2008.

The reason is his special method of cooking the meat – with both chicken and lamb marinated for 6-8 hours before then being slow-cooked in the tandoor oven. After this the meat is then used in the vast variety of curries on offer.

Sheba is not pretentious, but then it doesn’t need to be; its cooking speaks for itself. The word Sheba means hospitality, and it is this that the restaurant prides itself on. Its glass front advertises its award-winning credentials, giving way to a simple rectangular restaurant with orange banquettes and chairs, white table clothed tables with red runners and fanned napkins, comfy banquettes, a bar at the far end and brightly coloured, cheerful artwork of different planets. It seats around 34-38 maximum for a private event, while downstairs can seat between 55-60.

The basement is similar in style yet with different colour scheme. The black banquettes are complemented by the black leather high backed chairs which have striking red stripes. There are historical Indian pictures on the wall but the white table cloths and flowers on each table remaining the same as upstairs. There is also a separate bar so guests can be served directly in the room without having to venture upstairs.

However one point of note is that the only loos in the venue are downstairs, so even during a private event, guests upstairs may come down and use the facilities. This doesn’t put off the wide range of parties which use the venue – from stag nights to corporate dinners. It’s essentially a classic Indian restaurant, but serving high quality food – for example, all it’s meat is premium and halal, all its ingredients are fresh and they use no artificial colours or preservatives.

There’s a set lunch menu for £6.95 or there are three different set menus for dinner at £12.50, £13.95 and £16.95 and guests are able to pick from these menus on the night, although ordering a la carte can also be arranged if preferred. There’s no hire charge.
