Overview
The entrance is dramatic and enticing. As is the restaurant itself and its private dining rooms too. If you want to dine on first class Chinese fare in an immaculate venue with stories to share, then Ken Lo’s is the place for you.
The story of Ken Lo and his Memories of China establishment is remarkable and that history permeates the venue. His father was the Chinese ambassador to England and he brought the family to the UK in 1919. Decades later, Ken Lo had become a Cambridge graduate, a professional tennis player, a food writer and most importantly a restaurateur. Ken Lo’s in Belgravia was one of the first of its kind to deliver superior Chinese cuisine in surroundings that ooze class. To this day, it remains classy with a focus on high-quality and can proclaim to having regular royal visitors to its tables.
The private dining rooms are ingeniously laid out with a series of sliding doors. They can easily be arranged into two separate dining spaces or indeed, one large area. Partitions hide you from the public area diners and a plasma screen is available on request. The main room will sit 15 at a round table and the second room will sit 10-12. If you merge the rooms, a maximum of 28 guests can be accommodated for.
The décor is Chinese in theme and entirely fresh and modern. The woods are light, the splashes of embellishment bright red and lucky of course. Everywhere you look there is a subtle adornment that is eye-catching yet classic. The window at the entrance for example is etched at great expense with a horse; a Chinese symbol of power, beauty and freedom. The panels on the wall display ancient Chinese art, again of horses. Each week exotic fresh plants and flowers are brought in and jump out beautifully against the sand coloured walls.
The main restaurant at Ken Lo’s Memories of China carries on the interior design of the private dining rooms but with added Chinese style panels. It can sit up to 130 and often the entire site is booked out for corporate events. The bar is superbly cosy with big wicker chairs and a colonial feel. The logo of the restaurant is embossed on the back wall and on the bar itself and is an attractive, bright red illustration of the Chinese name of the venue.
That leads us to the food and of course, if it’s good enough for royalty, it’s good enough for us. You’re in capable hands here; it was Ken Lo’s specific intention to provide the very best in Chinese cuisine and as an expert of Chinese food himself, no corners have been cut to ensure that your meal will be exquisite. Prepared with the freshest of first-rate ingredients, you can expect classic dishes such as Peking duck alongside modern interpretations such as fragrant braised aubergines. Sadly Ken Lo passed away in 1995 but you will be in capable hands with the Executive Chef Kam Po But who has been at the helm for decades.
At Ken Lo’s in Belgravia you can let yourself slip away into a Chinese wonder-world that is full of decorative splendour and delectable dishes. Let yourself be regaled by stories of the man himself and enjoy a timeless experience in one of London’s richest Oriental restaurants.
