Insider View
Some places really do have a certain something, could it be a ‘wow’ factor? Well if you’re looking for wow, wow and wow again, then the private spaces at Flemings hotel really do fit the bill.
I’m a big fan of Designers Guild-type fabrics, the chic striking designs that I can only admire from afar, given their even more striking prices. The designer of Flemings, Grant White, has spared no expense in decking out this hotel in what can only be described as modern retro. The fabrics are lush, plush and vibrant with colour schemes including shocking fuchsia pink mixed with electric turquoise, or wine red with shocking pick velvet swirls.
It sounds horrific, and could well be a disaster in less capable hands, but it’s fabulous – superbly fitted out with bags of character, completely over the top and yet it totally works.
The private dining room looks like a purple version of the mirror maze from the James Bond movie, “The Man with the Golden Gun”. The rich wine coloured walls are adorned with floor to ceiling length diamond-shaped mirrors which reflect each other, giving the room a never-ending feel. Gold branches serve as wall lights from which hang glass teardrops, gold patchwork wallpaper covers the ceiling, the purple carpet underneath has pink and mauve swirls.; it’s all very OTT but it’s fabulous. It can be used as a one long oblong or four smaller tables of four – perfect for a card game evening, exclusive birthday dinner or glamorous afternoon tea. There’s no room hire but a minimum of 8 guests.
The Looking Glass Room at the other side of the hotel is more a collage of cream and beige with a few choice features such as blood red lampshades just to ensure the room remains striking. Windows look out onto a plant covered wall, giving the room a great day time feel as well as being warm for evening events. Seating 24 on one long board room table, the high backed, retro-stylised silver and beige chairs reflect off the art deco mirrors, while the two central mirrored doors give the room a feel of someone’s dining room, rather than a hotel function room. The room, however, is equipped with the mod cons of music system, and presentation screen to accommodate more formal or corporate events.
Finally, the cocktail bar is a vision in turquoise and electric fuchsia pink, combined with silver pleat feature bar at one end, feature chandeliers used as side lamps and a mountain of cushions to ensure the banquette seating and little bucket chairs are complemented at all times. Although it has quite a girlie, “Sex in the City”-type feel to it, the contemporary nature would allow chaps to feel at ease here too, as would the TV screen, which is often used to show either film reels or live sporting events should your particular time and date clash with some vital game. With room for 70 (cocktail and canapés) there’s a minimum spend for exclusive hire of £2,000.
